8/30/2023 0 Comments Warka water towerMany Ethiopian children from rural villages spend several hours every day to fetch water, time they could invest for more productive activities and education," he says. "It's not just illnesses that we're trying to address. If the tower is mass produced, the price would be even lower, Vittori says. His team hopes to install two Warka Towers in Ethiopia by next year and is currently searching for investors who may be interested in scaling the water harvesting technology across the region. In all, it costs about $500 to set up a tower-less than a quarter of the cost of something like the Gates toilet, which costs about $2,200 to install and more to maintain. Plus, he says, "once locals have the necessary know-how, they will be able to teach other villages and communities to build the Warka." The structures, made from biodegradable materials, are easy to clean and can be erected without mechanical tools in less than a week. He says because the most important factor in collecting condensation is the difference in temperature between nightfall and daybreak, the towers are proving successful even in the desert, where temperatures, in that time, can differ as much as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So how would Warka Water's low-tech design hold up in remote sub-Saharan villages? Internal field tests have shown that one Warka Water tower can supply more than 25 gallons of water throughout the course of a day, Vittori claims. Moreover, pumps need electricity to run as well as access to spare parts in case the pump breaks down." So it's technically difficult and expensive. ", public infrastructures do not exist and building a well is not easy," Vittori says of the country. "To find water, you need to drill in the ground very deep, often as much as 1,600 feet. A few years back, an MIT student designed a fog-harvesting device with the material. But Vittori's invention yields more water, at a lower cost, than some other concepts that came before it. Using mesh to facilitate clean drinking water isn't an entirely new concept. The water in the container then passes through a tube that functions as a faucet, carrying the water to those waiting on the ground. As cold air condenses, the droplets roll down into a container at the bottom of the tower. A mesh net made of nylon or polypropylene, which calls to mind a large Chinese lantern, hangs inside, collecting droplets of dew that form along the surface. The rigid outer housing of each tower is comprised of lightweight and elastic juncus stalks, woven in a pattern that offers stability in the face of strong wind gusts while still allowing air to flow through. But every detail, from carefully-placed curves to unique materials, has a functional purpose. The invention from Arturo Vittori, an industrial designer, and his colleague Andreas Vogler doesn't involve complicated gadgetry or feats of engineering, but instead relies on basic elements like shape and material and the ways in which they work together.Īt first glance, the 30-foot-tall, vase-shaped towers, named after a fig tree native to Ethiopia, have the look and feel of a showy art installation. It was this dilemma-supplying drinking water in a way that's both practical and convenient-that served as the impetus for a new product called Warka Water, an inexpensive, easily-assembled structure that extracts gallons of fresh water from the air. Other low-tech inventions, like this life straw, aren't as complicated, but still rely on users to find a water source. "If the many failed development projects of the past 60 years have taught us anything," wrote one critic, Toilets for People founder Jason Kasshe, in a New York Times editorial, "it's that complicated, imported solutions do not work." Costs and maintenance could render many of these ideas impractical. The water scarcity issue-which affects nearly 1 billion people in Africa alone-has drawn the attention of big-name philanthropists like actor and co-founder Matt Damon and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who, through their respective nonprofits, have poured millions of dollars into research and solutions, coming up with things like a system that converts toilet water to drinking water and a "Re-invent the Toilet Challenge," among others.Ĭritics, however, have their doubts about integrating such complex technologies in remote villages that don't even have access to a local repairman. People in the region spend 40 billion hours a year trying to find and collect water, says a group called the Water Project. And even when they find it, the water is often not safe, collected from ponds or lakes teeming with infectious bacteria, contaminated with animal waste or other harmful substances. In some parts of Ethiopia, finding potable water is a six-hour journey.

8/30/2023 0 Comments Stick blender reviews 2015It mashed the potatoes too much and made them the wrong texture. I tried to use it a few times for mashed potatoes and I ended up just switching to a regular masher that you use by hand. She had used it mainly for soups and mashed potatoes. It ended up being okay, but nothing great. She loved using it and so I was excited to get it. My mom passed down her Cuisinart quick prep hand blender to me and I thought that I would love it. True This is not my favorite kitchen item. It's small enough to store easily but not cheap looking. You do have to move it around so it blends the entire pot. Put it in the food and hit the button, easy as that. No need to transfer to a special container to blend.Ĭleans very well, just make sure you do not get the cord part wet. I like that you can just stick this in the pot your recipe is cooking in. It is small so stores away nicely, cleans up easily too.īlends up chunks in my soups and sauces within just a minute or two. Just make sure you put this all the way to the bottom of your pot or you will be wearing some of what you are making. Blends up chunks nice and smooth and very fast too. I like that I can leave my recipes in the crock pot or pot to blend and not have to dirty a blender container. Very powerful! I use mine mainly for soups and homemade tomato sauce. This is an awesome little immersion hand blender. The cord is in great shape, the blades are still sharp. I have owned mine for over 20 years and have constantly used it. and the long design allows easy use in tall glasses with no mess. We bought a second one so we could make our shakes together. My son loves to make his own shakes, He is able to blend his drinks with no mess. I use a sponge and warm soapy water to wipe it off and dry it with a towel as soon as I use it. from sauces to milkshakes it does it all.Ĭleaning is easy. Its versatile and very easy to use, just plug it in and submerse it in the glass and blend. I actually own two of them now.īlends powder drinks smooth and creamy and blends sauces to a well blended creamy sauces. I have owned one for over 20 years and it still works like a charm! From making milkshakes to blending sauces I find its small size makes it easy to use and the tall skinny design makes it easy to store. Mine had taken a beating when I had it and it lasted for 5 years before it pooped out! The design was well done and it is nice to look at and use. A shallow bowl did have some problems but most of the time in worked well in a deep bowl or pan. This was easy to use and had an easy hand grip to hold as you used it in either a pan or a deep bowl. It did come apart for easy cleaning and you did have to be careful to not cut yourself as you were cleaning it. The only drawback I had with this was getting the gunk out from the crevices in between the blades. I blended meats and vegetables to noodles with sauce into a smooth puree with no problems. I also used it to puree soft foods for myself to eat when I had dental surgery. I used this to blend ice cream and various additives, like cookies or candy bits to make smoothies and milkshakes. It mashed large chunks of food quickly, as in soups and stews. It made foods that needed to be pureed smooth and evenly blended. I had it for at least 5 years before it wore out! It was small but it was powerful and did many tasks that helped me save time in the kitchen.īlending power was good and it blended every thing easily. This is a nice little hand held blender that got lots of use in my home. I've had it for less than a year and it works fine but remember, it's not an expensive mixer so time will tell how durable it is. I wish there were more and it's a bit heavier than I like but it's not bad. It's best not to let food dry on it so I would clean right after using. The fact that you can hold it in your hand and control the beak makes it very versatile.Īlthough the shaft doesn't come off, it's still pretty easy to clean. Obviously it's not as powerful as my big mixer but it does a good job as a light duty mixer. This is really good for quick mixing and I probably wouldn't use it as a heavy duty mixer. It saves me a lot of time and saves me the hassle of bringing out the big mixer or blender. This is actually a really handy hand blender which works well as a blender, mixer and is great for making omelets, shakes and things of that nature. 8/30/2023 0 Comments Large photo print kona“ Block ads on – This website” switch off the toggle to turn it from blue to gray.Click the AdBlock Plus icon in the browser extension area in the upper right-hand corner.Refresh the page or click the button below to continue.Under “ Pause on this site” click “ Always”.Click the AdBlock icon in the browser extension area in the upper right-hand corner.Check out more photos in the gallery above.Įlsewhere in design, VERSO Gallery’s ‘Bridge’ moved into a house in the Hamptons.Īdblock Adblock Plus Adblocker Ultimate Ghostery uBlock Origin Others Each bathroom’s custom concrete sinks and soaking tubs strike similarities to the land’s lava flow, and each bedroom’s textiles align with traditional Hawaiian themes.įive restaurants sit at the resort’s center alongside the Asaya Spa, giving guests a central place to convene and reimagining the communal feel that drew guests in since the resort’s initial opening.
